Många kända artister har spelat på legendariska Half Moon i Putney. Ända sen 1963 har det spelats live-musik där och ibland är det Unplugged-kväll, där nya förmågor får anmäla sig i förväg och så kör man några låtar var under kvällen.
Det har blivit mer och mer vanligt med låtskrivar-cirklar, så kallade "Songwriter's Circle", där man berättar och spelar några låtar var och ibland blir det nya oväntade konstellationer. I mitt förra inlägg såg vi ett sådant då Jackson Browne och Billy Strings spelade tillsammans.
På tisdags-kvällen kvällen var det dags igen på Half Moon och Beth Keeping och Vic Allen bjöd in två vänner och så spelade och berättade man. Trevligt och avspänt, men med en tilltalande enkelhet och närhet.
Beth Keeping sjunger bra och skriver om det som är viktigt för henne. Hon spelar akustisk gitarr och musiken är lugn. På skiva blir det mer klaviaturer och lite mer kommersiellt, lite syntigt och faktiskt med ett stänk Robyn.
Emily Faye är riktigt charmig och sjunger bl.a. rörande om sin lillebror. Lite mer country-rock-stuk. På skiva betydligt mer tillrättalagt och ibland ganska rockigt.
Vic Allen är det riktiga fyndet av dessa fyra. Mycket ambitiösa sånger. Hon sjunger och spelar gitarr bra. Även Vic är mer välarrangerad på skiva. Jag återkommer om hennes skiva som jag köpte på plats. Ett smakprov på hur Vic låter i denna cover av Goo Goo Dolls "Iris":
Bertie är lite annorlunda med fyndiga och roliga sånger med lite knorr. Även i det avslappnade snacket är han riktig rolig, som när han kom hem till sina föräldrar och berättade att han sagt upp sig från sitt jobb och tänkte satsa på musiken istället...
En trevlig kväll med avskalad och äkta musik. Det känns att det finns kulturhistoria i väggarna. Här har många världsartister tragit sina första stapplande steg och det är väl bara att önska kvällens unga artister lycka till.
Det är en tuff värld och det gläder mig att det fortfarande finns de som försöker utan att slukas upp av alla hinder och begränsningar.

Young songwriters at Half Moon

Many famous artists have played at the legendary Half Moon in Putney. Ever since 1963, live music has been played there and sometimes there are Unplugged evenings, where new talents can register in advance and then play a few songs during the evening.
It has become more and more common with songwriter circles, where you tell stories and play a few songs and sometimes there are new unexpected constellations playing together. In my last post you could see Jackson Browne and Billy Strings playing together.
Last Tuesday evening it was time for another one at Half Moon. Beth Keeping and Vic Allen invited two friends and they played songs and told stories. It was pleasant and relaxed, but with an appealing simplicity and closeness.
Beth Keeping sings well and writes about what is important to her. She plays acoustic guitar and the music is quiet. On her records there are more keyboards and the music is a bit more commercial, with synths and actually she sounds a little like Robyn.
Emily Faye is really charming and sings a song about her little brother. It’s more like country-rock stuff. On record the songs are much more arranged and sometimes even rocking.
Vic Allen is the real find of these four. Very ambitious songs. She sings and plays the guitar. Vic’s songs are also a bit more arranged on her records. I'll soon write more about her album, which I bought at the show. Here you can taste how Vic sounds on her cover of the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris":
Bertie is quite different with his witty and funny songs. Even his chatter between songs are really funny, like when he came home to his parents and told them that he should quit his job and focus on music instead...
A pleasant evening with quiet and genuine music. It feels like there are cultural history in the walls. Here, many world-class artists have taken their first staggering steps, so it's only fair to wish tonight's young artists the best of luck.
It's a tough world out there and I'm glad that there are still those who try to make it, without being swallowed up by all the obstacles and limitations.
